Is it possible to set RightClick's hotkey to a mouse function button?
Published on May 5, 2005 By Martin Eden In OS Customization
I really like the idea of RightClick and want to be able to use it.
However, having to trigger the menu through a keyboard hotkey makes it more cumbersome - when browsing the web (or whatever) I'd have to keep one hand contantly ready to press a key combination (eg. Winkey, Alt+`). While this wouldn't be impossible, using the mouse to call up a pop-up menu is a lot more natural.

Is it possible to assign a mouse button (especially if you have a mouse with 4 or more buttons) as the hotkey for RightClick?
If not, would anyone here agree with me that this is functionality you would like to see in any coming versions of RightClick? I know it's not a big priority for Stardock, but it really would enhance the program, I think.

What do other people think?

Please don't hit me for asking this I did read your post...twice, to be sure.

What happens when you right-click on the desktop? When I do that, the menus pop up.

Sorry, I must have not made myself clear
If you right-click on the desktop that does work. But if you want to bring up the RC menu at any time instead of just when you're on the desktop you have to use a keyboard shortcut.

I agree it is a tad bit of a pain. However most people probably do not have a mouse with more than the usual 3 (middle scroll) that they have now. I suppose a control+click or something along that might be possible, but that still uses the keyboard.
Another option that might work for you is if there were a way to add it to the titlebar of each app. So you could simply click an icon there to access it.

what you would find useful is Objectbar ... objectbar is the more powerful predecessor to right click .. it is a similarly designed menu, but it can be assigned a shortcut key and if you can program a mouse button to launch that shortcut (i have a random button on my logitech that will 'shift+f9' for me) than you can make your custom menu come up right under your mouse cursor at any time. this is the interface i use - i had the same concern as you using right click.

the later betas of objectbar have a menu build system similar to right click.. however, only in the older, latest full release (2.65) can you bring a single menu up under your cursor with an assigned shortcut - and that release has a more advanced builder (which i actually prefer - greatly - over the new one). so if you have ODNET, check it out.. i think you'll find out its very handy and highly customizable.

I've set up ObjectBar and it now does everything I had RightClick doing...
And it still just requires a keyboard shortcut.
Apart from looking slightly different it doesn't do anything new...

So I guess I should just go and get a mouse that will allow me to assign a key combination to a mouse button, and then use that key combination (triggered from my mouse) to show the menu? Okay.

Thanks

you could also try objectDock, set it to one side of your screen or the other and then set up a mouse 'hotspot' so that when your cursor hits that side of the screen your shortcuts will pop up.

I've got a very basic Logitech mouse and it allows me to set several options (including assigning a shortcut key) when the scroll wheel is pressed. It's hard for me believe that driver utilities from the other brands don't offer similar functionality.
